The junior team does practices on the road, on the track, and cyclocross. You can find our workout schedule on the team calendar. If you’re a member, you’re also getting regular emails with the week’s activities. We have two seasons for practice.

From April through November:

  • Road rides on Saturdays, 5 PM (4 PM in October and November), 90 - 120 minutes.

Each practice we spend about half our time doing drills and skills; from the basics of braking and cornering, through intermediate skills like protecting your front wheel and riding in groups, to advanced bicycle control skills.

The rest of our practice is spent riding. Sometimes we race mock time trials, we stretch our legs on Huron River Drive, or we punish ourselves in nearby Barton Hills. Every ride is still focused on learning new skills, or building on experience we already have.

A road bike is preferred, but any bike will do.

  • Cyclocross practice on alternating Sundays, 5 PM (4 PM in October and November), 90 minutes.

All year we go through the cyclocross skills needed to be successful racers: dismounts, remounts, carrying, control, climbing, descending, and off-camber riding. Occasionally we have some mock races. We stay in one location the entire practice.

Cyclocross practice is very well suited to new riders! Any bike will do and if a new rider can’t keep up the pace, just sit down for a few minutes. Nobody is going anywhere, so you can just rejoin when you’re ready.

  • Velodrome practice on alternating Mondays, 6 PM (new riders at 5 PM), 120 minutes.

For two hours, we practice our track riding skills and develop stamina, speed, and endurance.

The Lexus Velodrome hosts our track workouts. Equipment, including shoes and helmets and of course track bikes; track time; and coaching is all provided at no charge for our juniors.

You can bring your own bike to the velodrome, but it must be a track bike! If you’re not sure if your bike can go on the track, ask the coach.
